Splashing Paint to Loosen Up

These paintings were done by splashing various colors and completely covering the painting surface.  Then you paint negatively and create something from those splashes.  It is a great exercise to loosen you up so you can paint more freely and creatively.  I learned this technique from Bob Burridge. Why don't you try it?

Here is one I've been working on.  I had some trouble with the foreground because it didn't follow the landscape rules.  It should be the second lightest besides the sky but in the photo I took it wasn't.  So I just painted what I saw instead. When I painted what I saw from the photo, it was like a dark wall blocking the hills behind.  It just didn't want to work.  So I went back in and lightened the foreground and allowed some light through the trees.  I like it a lot better.  Lesson learned:  Don't rely just on a photo, but go with my gut instinct too.

Landscape Rules from Darkest Values to Lightest Values:
  • darkest values-verticals
  • next -slanted planes
  • next-ground
  • lightest-sky

Painting a Portrait

I just finished a portrait using these steps:
1.  Drew the picture in pencil. Established the darks in the drawing.
2.  Toned the canvas with a green carefully over the picture
3.  Put in the light skin colors.
4.  Put in the dark skin colors for the shadows.
5.  Refined the painting and worked on the details.

How I Begin a Portrait Painting

I will be teaching a portrait workshop Aug. 10 so I have been painting lots of portraits.  Here is one portrait I am working on and I took a few photos as I went along.  I will share the final painting when it is finished.
I used tracing paper to add the drawing to the canvas.
You also can cover the back of the picture with pencil scribbling
to use as tracing paper.  It works great.
I carefully put a green wash
on the drawing and began
putting in my darks.
I began establishing my darks using my pencil..
